Students-Police Clash in Gaya, 2 Killed, 3 Injured
Gaya: March 1, 2006
The police in Gaya district opened fire at hundreds of students and their guardians protesting the expulsion and imprisonment of more than 200 students caught resorting to unfair means in the exams conducted by the Bihar Intermediate Education Council causing death of two persons and serious injuries to three others, officials in Patna said.
The incident occurred on Wednesday at Jagjivan Ram College campus in Manpur village in Gaya district, DIG (Magadh range) Arvind Pandey said.
Soon after the expulsion and arrests of the students caught cheating in the exam, an angry mob attacked the security force deployed within the campus with bricks and other objects. The police first resorted to lathi-charge and tear gas shells but when that failed to disperse the crowd, it opened fire at the protestors killing one Krishna Prasad, a kin of an examinee, and another person whose identity was yet to be determined, on the spot.
Three persons, including two children who happened to be at the riot scene received splinter injuries and were taken to a Gaya hospital.
More than two dozen policemen also suffered injuries in the attack by students and their supporters, Pandey said.
